Every sport has a historic Day when it changed the world, but when it comes to volleyball, there was no such historical Day until something unbelievable happened in Nebraska in August 2023.
As we all know, Nebraska is the epicenter of women’s volleyball in the USA, and one of the important days linked to this state is August 30, 2024. It is the most significant day for volleyball, especially for women’s volleyball. On Nebraska Volleyball Day, a world record 92,003 fans gathered in the memorial ground, Lincoln, to celebrate the success of Nebraska volleyball.
Record Number of attendees in Nebraska Volleyball Day
It was challenging to break the record of having the highest number of attendees. It was certainly not possible in the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ home stadium. Trev Albers, the director of athletics, talks about the hardships he and the team faced to make the Nebraska Volleyball Day happen in a documentary. He says that finding a venue big enough was very challenging, but we finally managed to go with the Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The NCAA championship match at a stadium was a shock for everybody.
It was all over the news: “Nebraska Volleyball Day.” In the 48 hours, they had to sell out, they were expecting around 30,000 because it would break the previous record of the match at the Kohl Center on September 16, 2022, between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Florida Gators, which drew 16,833 fans.
Little did they know that the system would crash, and they would sell out the whole stadium. It was a moment of shock and an exceptional Day for Nebraska volleyball. Who would have thought a women’s volleyball game would have over 90,000 attendees?
The Day
It was a great day for everyone there. Every single one of them knew they were a part of the history. It was an emotional day for everyone on the team, from Coach John Cook’s speech with teary eyes to all the crowd cheering “Go Big Red” at once. All the schools and shops were closed, and children were filling the busses to attend the match because these players were their mentors and their idols, and to see them on a big stage, they wouldn’t miss it for the world.
The whole Lincoln was buzzing. Everybody had goosebumps while singing The National anthem along with 92,000 others, and jets flying over the stadium was just icing on the cake.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers women’s volleyball team also did not miss this opportunity and made sure they put on a dominant show for their fans. They defeated Omaha Mavericks with a 25-14, 25-14, and 25-13 sweep.
Making History
Every channel had this one headline the following Day because it was not just for women’s volleyball but had the highest number of women’s sports history attendees. Everybody knew they did what seemed impossible, a Day ego. A collegiate team from Nebraska pulling something like this is what dreams are made of.
Many teams tried to attract fans to women’s sports by giving them free popcorn and free tickets, of course, but what the Nebraska Cornhuskers did was the complete opposite. They made the whole state proud with their constant good performance, and eventually, they became the women’s volleyball team with the most incredible fanbase. They will go down in history as a women’s sporting team that sold out Memorial Stadium in 48 hours.
Always Dream Big
After all, it’s been through. After decades of work, the Nebraska volleyball folding chairs at the Colosseum, with 50 fans, are now competing against 92,003 fans. Their constant hard work and self-belief brought them here.
This is a sign to believe in yourself, always dream big, give it a go, and show complete determination because the sky is the limit.
