Early read

What the first two scores reveal

The opening results tell a much different story than simply putting two wins in the record column.

Nebraska has started the official season with six consecutive set victories. The Huskers did not need a fourth set against either UNLV or Texas, turning both matches into straight-set wins.

The most notable score is the Texas result. Nebraska won all three sets by at least six points, including two 25-19 frames before closing the match 25-16. That produced a decisive opening weekend against a No. 2 opponent.

The margin matters

Against UNLV, Nebraska won by seven, ten and nine points. Against Texas, the margins were six, six and nine. Across the two matches, the Huskers have therefore won every completed set by at least six points.

That makes the next score worth watching. South Dakota State is the first road match after the Las Vegas weekend, and the result will show whether Nebraska can carry the same level of control away from the showcase environment.

How to read Nebraska's volleyball score

Volleyball results contain more information than a simple win or loss.

3-0 Three-set sweep
3-1 Four-set victory
3-2 Five-set victory
2-3 Five-set loss

The first number is Nebraska's set total and the second number belongs to the opponent. Set scores such as 25-19 show the actual points won in an individual set. A match ends once one team reaches three set victories.
